Michel Bastet, Philippe Cornaz, Raul Esmerode: D'ailes fines |
The combination of mediated percussion (the piano) with the direct attack of vibes and marimba gives a unique sound. In addition to their original compositions, a pair by Philippe Cornaz and four by Michel Bastet, the unit has their way with Fred Hersch ("Child Song"), Monk ("I Mean You"), Astor Piazzolla ("Primavera Porteña), Carla Bley ("Vashkar"), and Ornette Coleman (a brief and playful romp through "When Will The Blues Leave"). It's undeniably pretty music, as the instruments chase ono another or chime in unison while nogetiating the flowing arrangements, which leave plenty of room for solo statements by each of the players along the way. Taken a track at a time it's fine, but a solid hour of this seems like a lifetime of dreamy textures and floating pulses. This is music best savored in small doses. Stuart Kremsky |
